Hello,

What is the meaning of “strong word” in the following sentences? My understanding of the expssion is the following: if a word is strong, it will have a great effect on people’s feelings or thoughts, it is a powerful word, it will have a great effect on someone. Is my understanding of the expssion correct? Also, can you give me a better definition of the expssion.

1. Mike: I hate my father. Greg: hate is a strong word.

2. You shouldn’t tell people they are ugly, ugly is a strong word.

3, A teacher should never tell his students that they are stupid, stupid is a strong word and telling students they are stupid will hurt their feelings.

4. Even is she is fat, it’s not nice to tell her she is fat. Fat is a strong word.

• Yes, you’re completely right.. A strong word is that one leaving a great impact on others. In English we have strong words and mild ones. A mild word is a word that you can use in many different occasions without worrying that it may upset or bother someone. All the four examples that you’ve just given seem fine to me; I would use the ”strong word” expssion in the same sentences that you wrote up there. Sometimes a strong word can be considered offensive but there’s still that fine line between strong words and offensiveness so definitely it’s not like ”swearing”.

For instance if you say “I don’t like spinach.” it could mean “I love spinach.” “I dislike spinach” “I loathe spinach” or “I hate spinach”

When people did this during a high-intensity cycling class, they were able to push harder for longer (up to 18 percent more), according to a study from Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. “Motivational self-talk, opposed to any kind of self-talk, works well for endurance performance because it reduces perception of effort, most likely through an increase in self-efficacy,” says Samuele Marcora, Ph.D., lead study author and professor of sport and exercise sciences at the University of Kent, Medway, in the United Kingdom. He adds that the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) in study subjects was reduced by 12 percent, enough to significantly increase performance.

Yet don’t think motivational self-talk is for endurance workouts alone. It also can be used to increase workload during high-intensity interval training.

It can even benefit you during competition, says Antonis Hatzigeorgiadis, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Physical Education & Sport Sciences at the University of Thessaly in Greece. For instance, his research has revealed that an eight-week self-talk training program and the use of self-talk in competition improved swimming times in young swimmers.

Want to reap the rewards of motivational self-talk? Follow these steps:

1) Identify your goals. This may seem obvious, but motivational self-talk won’t work unless you know what you want to achieve, Hatzigeorgiadis says.

2) Personalize your phrases. With your goal in hand, create a list of phrases that are meaningful and appealing to you. Keep them short, positive and motivational in nature, Marcora says. For instance, “drive forward” and “you’re doing well” worked well for participants in his study. Other research, by the way, has found that addressing yourself as “you” versus “I” is more effective.

3) Say it or think it. Whether you say these phrases out loud or think them isn’t important. The one caveat, though? “If you’re doing intense exercise, saying them out loud might be difficult and disturb your breathing,” Marcora says.

4) Time your talk right. It’s not just about what you say but when you say these phrases that matters. In Marcora’s study, participants used phrases that gave them confidence they could keep going longer during the middle part of the test effort. Phrases like “hang in there” and “feeling good” worked well. Yet as they approached the end when they were pushing at maximal effort, they used statements like “keep pushing” to help mobilize their effort.

5) Practice it. If you want motivational self-talk to help you during an actual competition, it has to be part of your training regimen. So sprinkle phrases that work well for you into your training sessions and use them consistently, Hatzigeorgiadis says.

I was kindly sent a free copy of the Strong Words magazine by Kate from, well Strong Words in hopes that I could be tempted into a subscription not to review, this review is me sharing my thoughts and if you think it’s your thing great, it’s definitely my type of magazine!

I also enjoyed the Q&A given by Polly Clark about the research that she threw herself in to in order to give a more authentic feel to her newest novel Tiger – she talks about her travels to track Siberian Tigers and learnt about their mannerisms. A great and information filled read. This article, as well as the others are really well written and articulated, there is quite literally something for everyone – even a crossword and poem on the back, the writers, editors and publicists have done a great job.

My verdict? Yes, I am a complete convert, I shall be subscribing for this fantastic concept of a magazine in time for this months issue! If you don’t feel like subscribing long term, you can buy a copy as and when you choose either online or from any good newsstand. The next issue will be available for your viewing pleasure on the 31st of July.

Some years ago, when I thought about starting a poetry site, I prayed about it. “Lord,” I said, “I’m about to write a poem, and if you want me to go ahead with this poetry site idea, make it a really good one.” I started writing, and in a short time, “Creatures of the Fire” was done. A haiku is traditionally a Japanese poem consisting of three short lines that do not rhyme. The origins of haiku poems can be traced back as far as the 9th century.

A haiku is considered to be more than a type of poem; it is a way of looking at the physical world and seeing something deeper, like the very nature of existence. It should leave the reader with a strong feeling or impssion. Take a look at the following examples of traditional and modern haiku poems to see what we mean.

Traditional Haiku

There were four master haiku poets from Japan, known as “the Great Four:” Matsuo Basho, Kobayashi Issa, Masaoka Shiki, and Yosa Buson. Their work is still the model for traditional haiku writing today. We have also included examples from Natsume Soseki here, a famed novelist and contemporary of Shiki, who also wrote haiku.

Reviewing examples of haiku poems is an excellent way to become familiar with this form of poetry and the sensory language it uses, and gain some inspiration.

In Japanese, there are five “moras” in the first and third line, and seven in the second, following the standard 5-7-5 structure of haiku. A mora is a sound unit, much like a syllable, but is not identical to it. This rhythm is often lost in translation, as not every English word has the same number of syllables, or moras, as its Japanese counterpart. For example, haiku has two syllables in English and in Japanese, it has three moras.

Matsuo Basho

Here are three examples of haiku poems from Matsuo Basho (1644-1694), considered the greatest haiku poet:

An old silent pond…

A frog jumps into the pond,

splash! Silence again.

Autumn moonlight-

a worm digs silently

into the chestnut.

In the twilight rain

these brilliant-hued hibiscus –

A lovely sunset.

Yosa Buson

Here are three examples of haiku poems from Yosa Buson (1716-1784), a haiku master poet and painter:

A summer river being crossed

how pleasing

with sandals in my hands!

Light of the moon

Moves west, flowers’ shadows

Creep eastward.

In the moonlight,

The color and scent of the wisteria

Seems far away.

Kobayashi Issa

Here are three examples of haiku from Kobayashi Issa (1763-1828), a renowned haiku poet:

O snail

Climb Mount Fuji,

But slowly, slowly!

Trusting the Buddha, good and bad,

I bid farewell

To the departing year.

Everything I touch

with tenderness, alas,

pricks like a bramble.

Masaoka Shiki

Here are seven examples of haiku poems from Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902), credited with reviving the haiku and developing its modern format:

I want to sleep

Swat the flies

Softly, please.

After killing

a spider, how lonely I feel

in the cold of night!

For love and for hate

I swat a fly and offer it

to an ant.

A mountain village

under the piled-up snow

the sound of water.

Night; and once again,

the while I wait for you, cold wind

Natsume Soseki

Natsume Soseki (1867-1916) was a widely respected novelist who also had many fairy tales and haiku published. Here are three examples of his haikus:

The lamp once out

Cool stars enter

The window frame.

Plum flower temple:

Voices rise

From the foothills

The crow has flown away:

swaying in the evening sun,

a leafless tree.

Modern Haiku

Many modern western poets do not subscribe to the 5-7-5 pattern. The Academy of American Poets recognizes this evolution, but maintains that several core principles remain woven into the tapestry of modern haiku. That is, a haiku still focuses on one brief moment in time, employs provocative, colorful imagery, and provides a sudden moment of illumination.

Here are seven examples of 20th-century haiku poems:

History and Structure of Haiku Poems

A haiku consists of three lines, with the first and last lines having five “moras,” and the middle line having seven (referred to as the 5-7-5 structure). Since the moras do not translate well into English, the haiku has been adapted to where syllables are used as moras.

Haiku poems started out as a popular activity in the 9th-12th centuries in Japan called ” tanka.” A tanka was a progressive poem, where one person would write the first three lines with a 5-7-5 structure, and the next person would add a section with a 7-7 structure. The chain would continue in this fashion.

The first verse was called a “hokku” and set the mood for the rest of the verses. Sometimes there were hundreds of verses and authors of the hokku were often admired for their skill. In the 19th century, the hokku took on a life of its own and began to be written and read as an inpidual poem. The word haiku is derived from hokku.

The Evolution of Haiku Poems

Isn’t it wonderful to know that such a rich tradition has lasted the test of time? The evolution of haiku might be perceived as a natural process, like anything else in life, but a dedication to its authenticity has pserved its core principles.

While master poets in the 1800s, such as Issa, wrote their haiku in the traditional 5-7-5 pattern – if read in Japanese – the pmise was still the same as it is today. English is a stress-time language which means that some words are stressed and others are not when speaking. Generally, content words such as nouns and principal verbs are stressed, while structure words such as articles, helping verbs, etc. are not. 

The Structure of Words

A number of structure words have both weak and strong pronunciation. As a rule, the structure will take the weak pronunciation which means that the vowel becomes muted. For example, take a look at these sentences:

• I can play piano.
• Tom is from New England.

Here are these two sentences with accented words in italics.

• Mary can play piano.
• Tom is from Chicago.

‘Can’, and ‘from’ and ‘is’ are unaccented and the vowel is very weak. This weak vowel sound is often referred to as a schwa. In the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) the schwa is repsented as an upside-down ‘e’. It is, however, also possible to use these words with a strong form. Take a look at the same structure words, but used with strong pronunciation:

• You CAN’T play tennis. – Yes, I CAN.
• Where is Tom FROM?

In these two sentences, the placement at the end of the sentence calls for the strong pronunciation of the word. In other cases, the usually unaccented word becomes accented as a means of stressing that something is contrary to what is understood by others. Look at these two sentences in a dialogue.

• You aren’t interested in coming next week, are you?
• Yes, I AM interested in coming!

Try the following exercise to practice both the weak and strong form. Write two sentences: One sentence using the weak form, and one using the strong form. Try practicing these sentences taking care to quickly glide over the vowel in the weak form, or pronouncing the vowel or diphthong sound firmly in the strong form. Here are a few examples:

• I’ve heard you have a company in the city. No, I work FOR a company in the city.
• What are you looking for?
• She is our sister.
• OUR sister is so talented!

Practice Activity

Decide how the word indicated would change the meaning in the following sentences when using the strong form. Practice saying each sentence aloud alternating between weak and strong forms. Do you notice how the meaning changes through stress?

1. I am an English teacher in Portland, Oregon. – strong ‘am’
2. I am an English teacher from Portland, Oregon. – strong ‘from’
3. He said that she should see a doctor. – strong ‘should’
4. They were able to find a job despite the difficult market. – strong ‘were’
5. Do you know where he comes from? – strong ‘do’
6. I’ll give the assignment to them. – strong ‘them’
7. She’s one of our most valued students. – strong ‘our’
8. I’d like Tom and Andy to come to the party. – strong ‘and’

1. I AM an English teacher … = It’s true even though you don’t believe it.
2. …. teacher FROM Portland, Oregon. = That’s my home city, but not necessarily where I live and teach now. 
3. They WERE able to find a job … = It was possible for them though you think not.
4. DO you know where … = Do you know the answer to this question or not?
5. … the assignment to THEM. = Not you, the others.
6. She’s one of OUR most valued students. = She is one of us, not of you or them.
7. … Tom AND Andy … = Not only Tom, don’t forget Andy.

Here are some of the most common words that have weak/strong pronunciations. Generally speaking, use the week form (schwa) pronunciation of these words unless they are stressed by coming at the end of a sentence or due to unnatural stress made to facilitate understanding.

Do you collect words? Many writers do. I know a writer who carries a notebook with her and records luscious words she encounters so she can use them in the books she writes, and in fact her novels feature such a beautiful vocabulary they are a pleasure to read. Using just the right word in just the right moment provides a thrill for writer and reader alike.

• • “He was mad.” “He was mad!” “He was very mad.” “He was infuriated.”

• • “She was sad.” “She was really sad.” “She felt empty.”

Aren’t those bolded sentences stronger than the others? Don’t you understand him, and her, much better? And just as important, aren’t those sentences much more interesting? I want to know why she feels empty! The fact that he is infuriated injects energy into whatever surrounds that sentence.

It also becomes boring to read about red roses, “bright red” lipstick, or mocha skin, when there are so many brilliant color words! Take a trip to a paint store and look at the varied (and sometimes crazy) names of colors, but choose carefully. Sangria lipstick … well, both weird and confusing. Berry lipstick, yes. (See a whole bunch of color words below!)

Find words for specific emotions, evocative colors, and strong verbs to make your sentences alive in your readers’ minds. Another benefit of seeking stronger words is that you step outside cliche; alabaster skin is so commonly used for pale white skin that most people only think of skin when they hear or read the word alabaster, right?
