Fix: Cannot Preview Excel Files In Outlook 2022

The release of Microsoft Office 2016 attracted many users because of its many new features such as new dark themes, real-time simultaneous collaboration between multiples users on the same Word Document, touch input optimization and many more. So with its release, quite a number of users were those who simply upgraded to Microsoft Office 2016 from the earlier Microsoft Office version instead of a fresh installation which is normal and shouldn’t cause any problem.

But in some cases, users have reported that they were unable to preview Microsoft Excel files on their accounts in Microsoft Outlook 2016. When they tried to do so, an error is thrown their way which states ” This File Cannot Be Previewed Because There Is No Previewer Installed For It”. The same error may also appear if you try to preview a Microsoft PowerPoint file in Microsoft Excel, and in similar scenarios where you preview a Microsoft office file in a Microsoft Office product.

Solution 1: Correct Windows Registry Entry

Press and Hold the Windows key and Press R. Run dialog box will appear.

Now the navigation path from here will differ by the type of Microsoft Office you have installed and the bitness of Microsoft Office and your Windows. If you are not sure about the bitness or the type of product, you can try all of the below paths and if you cannot find the next folder while following a certain path simply move on to the next path.

If you have installed a 32 Bit version of Microsoft Office and you have a 64 Bit Windows installed, then follow this path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPreviewHandlers

If you have a 32 Bit version of Microsoft Office installed on a 64 Bit Windows or a 64 Bit version of Microsoft Office installed on a 64 Bit Windows, then follow this path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPreviewHandlers

Once you have Selected (Highlighted) PreviewHandlers in the left pane, there will be number of registry strings in the left pane. But there are only 4 of them that concern us.

On the right you will be able to see three columns; Name, Type and Data. In the Name column, search for the four strings by the following names and make sure the corresponding value in Data is exactly the same as written below.

Name Data

If more than one string has the incorrect value then you will have to correct them all.

How To Freeze Panes In Excel

If you have a large table of data in Excel, it can be useful to freeze rows or columns. This way you can keep rows or columns visible while scrolling through the rest of the worksheet.

Freeze Top Row

To freeze the top row, execute the following steps.

3. Scroll down to the rest of the worksheet.

Result. Excel automatically adds a dark grey horizontal line to indicate that the top row is frozen.

Unfreeze Panes

To unlock all rows and columns, execute the following steps.

Freeze First Column

To freeze the first column, execute the following steps.

3. Scroll to the right of the worksheet.

Result. Excel automatically adds a dark grey vertical line to indicate that the first column is frozen.

Freeze Rows

To freeze rows, execute the following steps.

1. For example, select row 4.

4. Scroll down to the rest of the worksheet.

Result. All rows above row 4 are frozen. Excel automatically adds a dark grey horizontal line to indicate that the first three rows are frozen.

Freeze Columns

To freeze columns, execute the following steps.

1. For example, select column E.

4. Scroll to the right of the worksheet.

Result. All columns to the left of column E are frozen. Excel automatically adds a dark grey vertical line to indicate that the first four columns are frozen.

Freeze Cells

To freeze cells, execute the following steps.

1. For example, select cell C3.

4. Scroll down and to the right.

Result. The orange region above row 3 and to the left of column C is frozen.

Magic Freeze Button

7. Scroll down to the rest of the worksheet.

Result. Excel automatically adds a dark grey horizontal line to indicate that the top row is frozen.

How To Enable The Developer Tab In Excel For Windows

Bottom Line: Learn how to enable the Developer tab on the ribbon so that you can access commonly used functions for Macros, VBA, and Add-ins. Works on all versions of Excel for Windows (Excel 2007, Excel 2010, Excel 2013, Excel 2016, Excel 2019, and Office 365).

Skill Level: Beginner

The Developer Tab

The great news is that you only have to follow these steps once. Then, every subsequent time you open Excel, the Developer tab will be displayed for you.

How to Enable the Developer Tab

The steps to add the Developer tab are super simple.

Again, this is a one-time process, so now the ribbon will show the Developer tab whenever you open Excel.

What’s in the Developer Tab?

After you’ve turned on the Developer tab, some of the options you’ll find there include:

Visual Basic – This launches the VB editor. (You can also do this by using the keyboard shortcut Alt+F11.)

Macros – We can get a list of all of the macros available to work with. (The corresponding keyboard shortcut for this is Alt+F8.) We also have the ability to record new macros from the Developer tab.

Add-ins – We can insert and manage our Excel and COM add-ins.

Controls – We can also insert controls into the worksheet, modify control properties, edit the VB code for a control, and turn the Design Mode on and off.

XML – Options here include opening the XML Source task pane to manage XML maps, importing an XML data file, or managing any expansion packs that might be attached to a sheet we are working with.

Depending on your skill level, you may not find yourself using all of these features, and that’s OK. It never hurts to know what’s available to you and have access to the tools at your disposal. Just because you aren’t a developer by trade doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t want the ability to use the Developer tab. 🙂

I personally use the Developer tab most frequently for VBA macros. I’ve written a post outlining 18 tips and shortcuts to save time with writing VBA macros for Excel (or other Office applications, for that matter). You can check it out here.
