Excel: How to Auto Fill a Growth Series

Previously we learned how to autofill a linear series by adding or subtracting a step value. In this tutorial, we define a growth series (hint: we multiply by a step value), and provide step-by-step instructions for autofilling a growth series in Excel. What is a Growth Series?

In a growth series, the next number in the series is found by multiplying the previous number by a constant or step value. This creates a geometric sequence (trend, pattern). The step value can be a positive or negative number, an integer or decimal, but it cannot be zero.

The simplest example of a growth series has a step value of 2. If our beginning number is 1, the next five numbers in the series are: 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32. Each subsequent number in our sample growth series is found by multiplying the current number by 2.

How to Autofill a Growth Series in Excel

There are three different methods for instructing Excel to autofill a growth series. The first two use the Fill Handle and the third uses the Excel ribbon found in Excel 2007 and newer versions. Learn the method which best suits your style.

Method #1: Enter First Two Numbers in the Series

Type the first two numbers in the first two worksheet cells (figure 1).

Select these two cells, and hover the cursor over the lower right corner to display the Fill Handle (+).

With the RIGHT mouse button pressed, drag the Fill Handle up, down, or across to select the cells to be filled. Release the mouse.

From the menu that now displays, select Growth Trend (figure 2).

The autofill results are shown in figure 3. Because two numbers were entered, Excel could determine the step value.

If you want a step value of 3, enter 1 and 3 into the first two cells (1×3=3). What if you want a step value of 2, but you want the series to begin with the number 5? You would enter 5 and 10 (5×2=10) in the first two cells.

In the second method, we only enter the first number and then specify the step value on the Series window. The four images below show our process of creating a growth series starting with the number 1 and having a step value of 3.

Enter the first number in the starting cell. Then hover the mouse over the lower right edge of the cell until the Fill Handle appears.

Press the Fill Handle with the RIGHT mouse button, and drag to select the cells to autofill.

    Method #3: Using the Ribbon to Open the Series Window

    The Series window can also be reached via the ribbon in newer versions of Excel.

      You can use the following calculation to determine how many blocks will be included in the fill region.

      The formula for volume is:

      Greater is the larger of the 2 corresponding coordinate values and lesser is the smaller of the 2 corresponding coordinate values.

      How to Enter the Command

      1. Open the Chat Window

      The easiest way to run a command in Minecraft is within the chat window. The game control to open the chat window depends on the version of Minecraft:

      For Java Edition (PC/Mac), press the T key to open the chat window.

      For Pocket Edition (PE), tap on the chat button at the top of the screen.

      For Xbox One, press the D-Pad (right) on the controller.

      For PS4, press the D-Pad (right) on the controller.

      For Nintendo Switch, press the right arrow button on the controller.

      For Windows 10 Edition, press the T key to open the chat window.

      For Education Edition, press the T key to open the chat window.

      2. Type the Command

      We will cover examples of how to use the /fill command to cover the ground under you, build a solid structure, build a hollow structure, and mine a large area instantly.

      Cover the Ground under You

      Let’s start by showing how to replace a region of blocks that are beneath where you are standing. For example, let’s cover the ground below us in a 11x1x11 area with quartz block with the following command:

      /fill ~-5 ~-1 ~-5 ~5 ~-1 ~5 quartz_block

      Type the command in the chat window. As you are typing, you will see the command appear in the lower left corner of the game window. Press the Enter key to run the command.

      This /fill command would replace 121 blocks beneath you with blocks of quartz.

      You will see the message “121 blocks filled” appear in the lower left corner of the game window to indicate that the fill command has completed.

      Build a Solid Structure

      Next, let’s look at how to build a solid rectangular structure. Since we are filling a solid structure, we want to make sure that the region is not where we are standing, otherwise we will be stuck inside the fill region.

      If we avoid combining negative and positive coordinates (and only use positive values for the X and Z coordinates), the structure should be constructed next to us.

      For example, let’s fill a region next to us with blocks of redstone with the following command:

      /fill ~1 ~0 ~1 ~10 ~10 ~10 redstone_block

      Type the command in the chat window and press the Enter key to run the command.

      This /fill command would fill a solid structure of 1100 blocks of redstone right beside us.

      You will see the message “1100 blocks filled” appear in the lower left corner of the game window to indicate that the fill command has completed.

      This is a very fast way to build a tower or other large solid structure.

      Build a Hollow Structure

      One of the most powerful uses of the /fill command is to build a hollow structure. This is a quick and easy way to build the frame of a house or shelter.

      For example, let’s build a large hollow cobblestone structure with the following command:

      /fill ~1 ~-1 ~1 ~10 ~5 ~10 cobblestone 0 hollow

      Type the command in the chat window and press the Enter key to run the command.

      This /fill command would build a hollow structure where the outer block is made of cobblestone and the inside of the structure is filled with air.

      You will see the message “380 blocks filled” appear in the lower left corner of the game window to indicate that the fill command has completed.

      Now if you break the outer layer of the structure, you can see that it is empty and hollowed out on the inside. You can then use this as the frame of your house!!

      TIP: If you wanted to do this with oak wood planks, just change the Minecraft ID to planks:

      /fill ~1 ~-1 ~1 ~10 ~5 ~10 planks 0 hollow

      A hollow oak wood plank structure would be a great frame for a house!

      Mine a Large Area Instantly

      One interesting feature of the /fill command is that you can use this command to quickly mine a large area as big as you want and as deep as you want.

      For example, let’s mine starting 10 blocks deep (-10) up to ground level (-1), that is 5 blocks away from us in all horizontal directions with the following command:

      /fill ~-5 ~-10 ~-5 ~5 ~-1 ~5 cobblestone 0 destroy

      Type the command in the chat window and press the Enter key to run the command.

      This /fill command would replace all blocks in the fill region, including air. The replaced blocks will be dropped and can then be collected as if they were mined with a pickaxe or shovel.

      You will see the message “1210 blocks filled” appear in the lower left corner of the game window to indicate that the fill command has completed. All of the mined items would start popping up above the fill region. You can run over and pick up all of these items to add them to your inventory.

      This is a great way to quickly mine diamonds, iron ore, gold ore, redstone and other valuable items!!

      How To Use The Excel Countifs Function / 2023

      The COUNTIFS function in Excel counts the number of cells in a range that match one supplied criteria. Unlike the older COUNTIF function, COUNTIFS can apply more more than one condition at the same time. Conditions are supplied with range/criteria pairs, and only the first pair is required.  For each additional condition, you must supply another range/criteria pair. Up to 127 range/criteria pairs are allowed. 

      COUNTIFS is in a group of eight functions in Excel that split logical criteria into two parts (range + criteria). As a result, the syntax used to construct criteria is different, and COUNTIFS requires a cell range for range arguments, you can’t use an array.

      Basic example

      With the example shown, COUNTIFS can be used to count records using 2 criteria as follows:

      Notice the COUNTIFS function is not case-sensitive.

      Double quotes ("") in criteria

      Value from another cell

      When using a value from another cell in a condition, the cell reference must be concatenated to an operator when used. In the example below, COUNTIFS will count the values in A1:A10 that are less than the value in cell B1. Notice the less than operator (which is text) is enclosed in quotes, but the cell reference is not:

      Note: COUNTIFS is one of several functions that split conditions into two parts: range + criteria. This causes some inconsistencies with respect to other formulas and functions.

      Not equal to

      To construct "not equal to" criteria, use the "" operator surrounded by double quotes (""). For example, the formula below will count cells not equal to "red" in the range A1:A10:

      Blank cells

      COUNTIFS can count cells that are blank or not blank. The formulas below count blank and not blank cells in the range A1:A10:

      The easiest way to use COUNTIFS with dates is to refer to a valid date in another cell with a cell reference. For example, to count cells in A1:A10 that contain a date greater than a date in B1, you can use a formula like this:

      The safest way hardcode a date into COUNTIFS is with the DATE function. This guarantees Excel will understand the date. To count cells in A1:A10 that contain a date less than September 1, 2020, you can use:

      Wildcards

      The wildcard characters question mark (?), asterisk(*), or tilde (~) can be used in criteria. A question mark (?) matches any one character, and an asterisk (*) matches zero or more characters of any kind. For example, to count cells in a A1:A5 that contain the text "apple" anywhere, you can use a formula like this:

      The tilde (~) is an escape character to allow you to find literal wildcards. For example, to count a literal question mark (?), asterisk(*), or tilde (~), add a tilde in front of the wildcard (i.e. ~?, ~*, ~~).

      Notes

      Multiple conditions are applied with AND logic, i.e. condition 1 AND condition 2, etc.

      Each additional range must have the same number of rows and columns as range1, but ranges do not need to be adjacent. If you supply ranges that don't match, you'll get a #VALUE error.

      The wildcard characters ? and * can be used in criteria. A question mark matches any one character and an asterisk matches any sequence of characters.

      To find a literal question mark or asterisk, use a tilde (~) in front question mark or asterisk (i.e. ~?, ~*).
